“Blue Jackets” un “Monsters” atbalstītāji Kivlenieka piemiņai nolika ziedus, hokeja nūjas, balonus un plakātus pie Nationwide Arena un Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse haļļu ieejām.
2021. gada 5. jūlijā pirms Stenlija kausa finālsērijas ceturtās spēles Kivlenieks tika pieminēts ar klusuma brīdi un līdzjūtības vārdiem. Šis bija smags trieciens pilnīgi visiem.
Agrākais Kivlenieka komandas biedrs, tobrīd Vinipegas “Jets” uzbrucējs Pjērs Lūks Dibuā paziņoja, ka 2021.—22. gada NHL sezonu ierastā 13. numura vietā aizvadīs ar 80. numuru, ko “Blue Jackets” organizācijā valkāja Matīss Kivlenieks.

Godinot mūžībā aizgājušā Latvijas vārtsarga Matīsa Kivlenieka piemiņu, Latvijas Hokeja federācija sadarbībā ar Nacionālās hokeja līgas klubu Kolumbusas “Blue Jackets” šovasar pirmo reizi pa šo laiku organizēs jauno vārtsargu iesaistes projektu – “KIVI programmu”.
Programmas mērķis ir iepazīstināt ar hokeja vārtsarga pozīciju iesācējus līdz desmit gadu vecumam, kuri līdz šim vēl nav spēlējuši vārtsarga pozīcijā, bet vēlas to ļoti dzīvē izmēģināt.
Šīs programmas ietvaros šovasar pirmo reizi tiks organizētas divas bezmaksas nometnes – Jelgavas Ledus hallē un “Volvo Sporta centrā”. Šī būs lieliska iespēja jaunajiem hokejistiem.
